Language learning and pronunciation apps for Mac

Decide whether you need a structured course, pronunciation practice or focused exam preparation. The number of languages alone does not tell you which app fits your next learning goal.

How to choose

Compare Talkify and Sparky for course structure, and inspect Accent Coach, Mimic and Pronunciation Master for speech practice. Check the language and voice support on each product page.

Examly is a compact unofficial practice companion, not an exam provider or a replacement for a full preparation course. Squiddy combines Chinese and Japanese reference material with a finite game lab. Offline capabilities can still depend on voices or speech resources installed on your Mac.

Capabilities and limits

Talkify

Language lessons built from listening, phrase construction, meaning recall, pronunciation and character tracing in short sessions. 21 languages carry complete A1–C1 paths with 30 units and 1,075 sessions each, so the content does not run out at the intermediate wall.

Consider before buying: Structured practice is not conversation with a person. It builds the foundation that makes conversation survivable.

Accent Coach

Teaches a specific accent rather than generic pronunciation. Pick from 27 accents across 12 languages, learn that accent's signature sound features with IPA and production tips, then record against reference audio and get an objective on-device score with A/B comparison.

Consider before buying: A score is a signal, not a verdict. Accent acquisition needs sustained practice no app shortcuts.

Mimic

Records you against a native reference and makes the difference visible — pitch contour, rhythm, delivery and articulation shown as data you can compare, rather than a single score with no explanation.

Consider before buying: It shows you the difference. Closing it is practice, and that part is still work.

Pronunciation Master

Drills the specific sounds that break Mandarin, Japanese and German for learners: the four tones and tone sandhi, mora timing and pitch accent, and umlauts with the two ch-sounds and final devoicing. Test-driven rather than lesson-driven.

Consider before buying: Three languages, deliberately. Depth on the hard parts rather than a shallow pass at thirty.

Fluency Simulator

Role-play work conversations against an on-device AI with an animated avatar. The conversation engine, speech recognition, speech synthesis and model all run locally, so there are no API keys, no per-token cost and no recording of your practice leaving the machine.

Consider before buying: An on-device model is smaller than a frontier API. It is a rehearsal partner, not a language tutor with judgement.

Examly

An offline-first English exam practice app for Mac with 36 original unofficial selected-response items across IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced, plus timed mocks, explanations and local progress history.

Consider before buying: Examly is an independent, unofficial practice companion and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or licensed by IELTS, ETS, Cambridge University Press & Assessment or another exam owner. It contains no official or previously administered questions and is a compact 36-item practice bank, not a complete course, official preparation product, full-length exam replica or source of ongoing content updates. Its accuracy and best-score summaries describe performance on these local items only; they are not official scaled scores, readiness assessments or predictions of an examination result. Writing and speaking practice uses selected strategy choices and does not grade essays or speech. Listening uses macOS system text-to-speech rather than recorded human audio. The app has no ASR, tutor feedback, cloud sync, learner account or online question updates, and its five-day Week 1 plan is a simple starter schedule rather than a personalized curriculum.

Sparky

A local language-learning app for Mac with structured Chinese, Japanese, German and Serbian paths, varied active exercises, FSRS review, mistake drills and private progress.

Consider before buying: Sparky is an independent self-study tool, not an accredited course, proficiency examination, translation authority, school, live tutoring service or guarantee of fluency, pronunciation, test, academic or employment outcomes. Its course paths and rule-based tutor are bundled and finite; the tutor answers only a supported set of phrase, pronunciation, grammar, counting and study questions and is not generative AI or a human teacher. Speaking results compare a system-recognized transcript with target text using character-level similarity. They do not analyze phonemes, prosody, tone contour or accent and must not be read as pronunciation certification or proof that a human listener would understand the recording. Voice quality, available languages, transcription accuracy, on-device recognition and offline behavior depend on installed macOS voices, microphone permission, hardware, locale support and Apple system-service availability; a self-rating fallback may appear when recognition is unavailable. Progress is local to the current installation with no account, cloud sync, shared classroom or live feedback. Exercise correctness and translations remain study material that learners should verify when accuracy is consequential.

Squiddy Constructing Language

A fully offline Mandarin Chinese and Japanese game lab for Mac with 52 practice cards, bundled activity audio, and complete Chinese and Japanese reference PDFs.

Consider before buying: Squiddy Constructing Language is independent self-study material, not an accredited course, official Chinese or Japanese examination, live tutor, translation authority or guarantee of fluency, pronunciation, academic, travel or employment outcomes. The current Direct edition contains a finite set of 52 game cards and two bundled reference PDFs; it is not an open-ended generative tutor or continuously updated online curriculum. The 1,493-page Chinese and 1,363-page Japanese PDFs are reference material rather than proof of mastery, and learners should independently verify consequential translations, grammar guidance and cultural usage. Bundled game audio consists of the prompts packaged with supported activities. The separate 10-hour and 18-hour audio courses are not present in this Direct artifact. Offline operation means there is no learner account, classroom, live feedback, cloud synchronization or remote progress service. The website and App Store editions are separate products: the website Direct build is permanently unlocked after one purchase, while the App Store edition retains its own subscription commerce.
