Lectern vs Otter: local recording or a shared meeting workflow?
The useful distinction is where your recording workflow runs and how the notes will be used. A local archive and a shared meeting service solve different needs.

Choose by the workflow
Lectern focuses on on-device transcription and a searchable archive on your Mac. Its Direct release is a $10 one-time purchase for macOS 14 or later on Intel or Apple silicon. Confirm local resources, language, input and output support for your intended task.
Otter offers a free Basic plan and paid plans with differing allowances and collaboration features. Its current site also offers bot-free desktop recording on Mac and Windows as well as meeting-agent workflows. “No meeting bot” does not by itself establish offline processing. Check the Otter workflow description and current plan limits.
When each approach makes sense
- Consider Lectern when your priority is a local recording archive and no recurring app fee, and you have confirmed that its capture and language support fit.
- Consider Otter when the shared meeting workflow and plan features suit your team. Check how recordings, transcripts and account access are handled.
- Do not choose on an accuracy claim alone. This page reports no side-by-side transcription benchmark.
Run the same acceptance check
Use a short recording you are authorised to process. Include a name, a number with its unit, a negation and a proposed action. Check what the text actually says, whether you can locate it again and how to share only the corrected information.
If offline use is essential, prepare the chosen local resources and test with the network disconnected. Check whether the audio input captures the speakers you need; microphone recording is not the same as direct system-audio capture.
