How to find and delete duplicate photos on a Mac (safely)

Start with Apple Photos to merge duplicates for free. For similar frames, blurry shots and screenshot clutter, use a careful review workflow that keeps you in control.

Start with Apple Photos Duplicates

  1. Open Photos and find Duplicates in the sidebar.
  2. Review each group before choosing Merge.
  3. Check Recently Deleted after the merge. Keep an independent backup before a large cleanup.

With iCloud Shared Photo Library, select Both Libraries if you want to inspect both. If Duplicates is missing, Photos has not found duplicates in that library. Apple explains its duplicate-merging workflow.

A similar photo can still be a keeper

A resized export, an edited image and two portraits from a burst may look similar but serve different purposes. Inspect the face, expression, full-resolution detail and edit history before choosing. Do not assume the sharpest frame is always the one you want.

Blur suggestions also need judgment: an intentional soft background or motion effect can be part of the image. Review screenshots for receipts, instructions or other information you still need.

When Sift is useful

Sift gives duplicate candidates, blurry frames and screenshot clutter a review workflow with on-device analysis. Compare candidates side by side and choose what to remove. There is no unattended cleanup mode.

Start with a small group and a disposable photo to check removal and recovery. Your own library remains the source of truth; candidate counts and similarity suggestions are not a promise of storage savings.

Compare Sift with Apple Photos or see the photo-review checklist.

Keep a recovery window and a separate backup

Check Recently Deleted promptly and avoid emptying it while reviewing your choices. Recovery depends on the item still being retained. If iCloud Photos is enabled, review how library changes affect your other devices. Recently Deleted is not an independent backup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find duplicate photos on a Mac for free?

Start with the Duplicates collection in Apple Photos. Review the groups and use Merge for copies you want to combine. If Duplicates is absent, Photos has not identified duplicates in that library.

Should I delete every similar photo?

No. Similar frames can contain different expressions, edits or useful detail. Compare them at full size and keep the versions that matter to you.

Does Sift clean up photos automatically?

No. Sift shows duplicate, blur and screenshot candidates for you to review. You choose what to remove; there is no unattended cleanup mode.

Is Recently Deleted a backup?

No. Recovery is time-limited and depends on the item still being retained. Keep an independent backup, test recovery with a disposable photo and inspect Recently Deleted promptly.
