Sift vs Apple Photos Duplicates: what to try first

Try the built-in duplicate workflow first. Add a separate review tool only when you have a clear task left over, rather than assuming more detected candidates means better cleanup.

Start with Apple Photos

Apple documents a Duplicates view where you review groups and merge selected items. Removed duplicates appear in Recently Deleted, with recovery available within 30 days unless permanently deleted. Follow the instructions for your macOS version.

Do not treat Photos as merely a filename matcher, and do not assume every similar-looking frame belongs in a merge. Inspect the actual groups in your library.

What Sift adds to the review

Sift presents duplicate candidates, blurry-photo flags and screenshots for a reviewable sweep. Consider it when those additional categories are the work you want help organising. The website Direct edition is $10 once for macOS 14 or later on Intel or Apple silicon.

A blur flag is a suggestion, not a judgement about artistic intent. A sharp original and an edited export can both be useful. We have not published a benchmark establishing better detection than Photos, so this comparison makes no such claim.

A safe order of operations

  1. Back up irreplaceable photos independently.
  2. Inspect the built-in duplicate groups and keep the versions you need.
  3. Identify what remains: burst choices, intentional versus unwanted blur, or screenshots you no longer need.
  4. Test removal and recovery with a disposable item before a larger Sift review.
  5. Keep retained originals and check Recently Deleted promptly. Avoid permanent removal while decisions are still open.
