Timbre puts the draft and its voice inspector in one native Mac workspace. Start with the worked example or replace it with your own copy, then define the yardstick: a profile name, target tone attributes, preferred terms, words the brand avoids and claim phrases that should not appear. A manual Check voice action keeps the result tied to a known version of the draft, and Timbre tells you when the text has changed since that check.

The core analyzer is deterministic and needs no model or account. It produces an overall score and letter grade from four visible dimensions — lexicon alignment, claim integrity, readability and tone match — then highlights the exact spans behind the result. Configured banned terms and claims receive the strongest warnings; confident-tone hedges, likely passive constructions and long sentences are surfaced as heuristic editorial signals. The inspector ranks issues, explains each one and proposes a next step instead of hiding the score behind a single number.

A full Markdown voice report collects the four scores, word and sentence statistics, preferred-term hits, every ranked issue and its suggestion, plus the analyzed-draft character count. When a configured model is available, Timbre can also propose an on-brand rewrite. It immediately runs the deterministic analyzer over that output, shows the score change, warns if banned terms or claims remain, and can make one corrective retry before presenting the best result for review.

Voice checking and reporting stay local. Optional generation can use Apple Intelligence on supported Macs, a local Ollama or LM Studio server, or a cloud provider with an API key stored in the macOS Keychain. The separate website Direct edition is Developer ID-signed and Apple-notarized, permanently enables full reports and unlimited rewrites after one purchase, and contains no StoreKit subscription code, account requirement or trial timer.

What it doesn't do

Timbre is a deterministic editorial preflight, not a legal, regulatory, factual, plagiarism or comprehensive grammar review. Its tone and passive-voice checks are heuristics, and a high score does not prove that copy is accurate, effective, compliant or approved by a brand owner. The current Mac interface works with one active profile and draft at a time; it does not provide a saved profile library, document import, website monitoring or team workflow, and the working profile, draft and report are session-only, so copy the report before quitting. Only the first 60,000 characters of a larger draft are analyzed. AI rewrites require an available provider and still need human review; choosing a cloud provider sends the relevant draft and profile prompt directly to that provider under its terms.
