Use a spider diagram to organize notes and check recall
A useful note map should help you explain a topic, not merely decorate it. Start with one question and keep the first diagram small enough to review in a single sitting.

Build a map around one question
For example, put “How does a file backup work?” in the center. Add four spokes: source, destination, verification and restore. Under each spoke, add two concrete questions. Under verification, use “Were all files copied?” and “Can the copy be opened?”
Spider Notes uses radial spokes and concentric rings to arrange ideas. Its direct Mac edition requires macOS 26 or later on Intel or Apple silicon. Check the product page before assuming the direct edition includes features offered by the separate App Store edition.
Make relationships explicit
Write short labels you can explain aloud. If two branches overlap, decide whether they are siblings or whether one is a prerequisite for the other. Put an example beside an abstract term. “Verification” becomes easier to revisit when it includes an actual file you successfully restored.
Stop adding nodes when the map becomes difficult to explain. Splitting a large topic into separate maps is more useful than making every detail fit on one screen.
Check recall without looking
- Study the map once, then hide it.
- Write the central question and recall the main branches on paper.
- Explain each branch in your own words.
- Reopen the map and mark missing or confused relationships.
- Revise those labels and repeat on another day.
Spider Notes documents a recall mode; you can also use this paper-based check with any diagram. Record what you remembered before checking the answer. A pleasing layout alone is not evidence that you learned the topic.
Choose the right note format
Use a diagram when relationships matter. Use an outline for a long argument and a table when you need exact comparisons. Compare Mac note and study apps if you need another structure.
