Find large files on Mac and review them before deleting
Start with a list of files you can explain. Size tells you where to investigate; it does not tell you what you can safely remove.
Start with Finder
- Open Finder and choose the folder you want to inspect, such as Downloads.
- Use List view and sort by the Size column to review individual files. Folder totals can require a separate calculation.
- Use File → Find and add a File Size criterion for a threshold such as greater than 1 GB. Confirm the search scope before interpreting the results.
- Inspect the full path, file type, modification date and the application that owns each large item.
Finder and macOS Storage settings may be sufficient for a small cleanup. Apple's Finder search guide explains adding search criteria.
When a storage map helps

File access depends on the permissions you grant and macOS protections. A partial scan is not proof that the missing space does not exist. Check which volume and folders were included.
Worked example: a cleanup decision log
The following rows are synthetic examples, not a customer's files or measured storage savings.

External drives and recovery
Before a large scan, confirm whether the installed release can read your particular external volume and filesystem, and whether it reports permission failures. Choose the volume explicitly; do not assume a Mac-wide scan includes every mounted drive.
- Back up the files you intend to keep.
- Use a disposable file to check the available cleanup and undo controls.
- Confirm where the file moved and whether it can be reopened after recovery.
- Do not empty the Trash until you have checked the remaining files and backup. Recovery after permanent deletion is not promised.
