How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac without uploading

For an occasional image, start with Preview, which is already on your Mac. For recurring batches, use a local converter after checking a representative file.

Convert one image in Preview

  1. Open the HEIC image in Preview.
  2. Choose File → Export.
  3. Choose JPEG from Format and select a quality setting.
  4. Save with a new name in a separate folder.

If a format is missing, hold Option while opening the Format menu to reveal additional choices. See Apple's Preview conversion instructions.

Check more than the file extension

Open the JPEG and compare it with the original. Check orientation, pixel dimensions, colour and visible detail at full size. JPEG is lossy and does not preserve transparency. Keep the HEIC source if you may edit or export it again.

Check location and other metadata before sharing. A successful conversion does not prove that private metadata was removed or that every source feature survived. File size depends on content and quality settings; there is no guaranteed reduction.

When a batch converter helps

Recast brings local conversion, batch queues and a Shortcuts action into one Mac workspace. Read its format and tool reference first: image routes depend on your Mac's readers and writers, while some other formats require extra tools.

Before a large batch, keep the originals, select a separate output folder and convert one typical image. Verify it in the app or service that will receive the files. Review failed items instead of deleting the input folder.

An occasional export or a repeatable workflow?

Preview is a useful starting point for an occasional conversion. Recast is an option for repeated batches and automation. The website Direct edition requires macOS 14 or later on Intel or Apple silicon and costs $10 once.

Buy Recast — $10 once or read the conversion checklist before deciding.
